Here at GVC, our May teachings have started on such a powerful and spirit-filled note. Excerpt from the Pastor's message highlights five truths about the fruit of the Spirit:
  • The fruit of the spirit is not a gift, you work for it by leaning on the Most High. (Reference Scripture: John 15)
It is something for us as children of God to strive for not when we feel like it, but, daily. Thus the fruit of the Spirit is a product of allowing God to work within us. Example, It is possible to see an individual with a prophetic gift (1 Corithians 12) , but they lack love and patience. As believers, if we lean on God and depend on Him fruit grows in our lives.
  • The fruit of the Spirit is the result of the Holy Spirit at work in us (Reference Scripture: Galatians 5:19-23)
It is not by any work or effort of our own that we produce the fruit of the Spirit, but by solely by the working of the Spirit. When we come to Christ, we are filled with the Holy Spirit which produces good fruit inside of us.
  • Fruit is a byproduct of the Holy Spirit.
  • The fruit of the Spirit is one fruit.
Galatians 5:22-23 reads, “ But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

The use of the singular noun of ‘fruit’ within the scripture, makes us aware that one fruit is produced within us with nine different characteristics. Example., Within a banana many benefits are found such as; magnesium, potassium, vitamin B and protein. Yet one banana has all of these benefits. It is impossible to consume such a fruit, and
claim your bodywork has not received Vitamin B. Similarly, mirroring the fruit of the Spirit within the believers of the living God! As follows, it is not possible to have love but have patience.

It is key to note, the foremost fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5 is love. The bedrock of the fruit of the Spirit is love. It is undeniable that with love, all the characteristics follow.
  • A fruit is a product of maturity.
Only a mature tree will produce fruit, an immature tree will generate nothing. When the Spirit of the Lord matures within us, it is at that moment fruit can be produced. Maturity is not concerned with how long we have been in church, it is deals with the nature of commitment and intimacy of our relationship with the Lord. Fruit of the Spirit can be seen within the first stages of a reborn child of God, it is all possible with our seriousness to truly yeild to God.
  • The fruit of the Spirit is not a mere command, it is life.
The fruit of the Spirit is the life of the Spirit, it is the life of God in us! Having an awakened awareness of how vital it is to have the fruit of the Spirit, we will take it seriously. The presence of the fruit of the spirit is evidence that our character is becoming more like Christ.

Prayer:
Dear Father,
Lord, we humble come before you. By the wisdom, love and life given to us by Your Word, has
awakened us. Forgive us for walking in ignorance and in our flesh. Lord, please help us to
undertand the fruit of the Spirit. It is understanding that produces desire within us. We want to do
all that is possible for us to just walk in the Spirit. Lord we will not be complacent no longer, we
will not be sluggish no longer but we desire to receive grace to be better. We desire for the life of
God to live within us and to be the best versions of ourselves. We are determined and intentional
to be better, O Lord. It is Your love that conquers all. Father, we receive your precious grace to
be helped to allow Your Spirit to produce these good fruits within us. We thank you Lord, you
only give us good things, things that will grow us and make us better all for your glory and for
You to be magnified. Thank you for hearing our cry onto you, in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

As Christians, there is a constant battle for the control of our souls by the devil - the spiritual warfare which is real and inevitable in the life of every believer.

God has given us His full armour to ensure our victory all the way till the end. If we are going to remain victorious till the end, we cannot do without any piece of this christian armour.

CHRISTIAN ARMOUR-1:
Why do we need the whole armour of God? [Eph 6:10-13 GNB]

Put on all the armour that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil's evil tricks [Eph 6:11 GNB].
The spiritual warfare is real. Gracefully, God has made weapons available for us to confront every attack and come out as winners.
  • Vs 10-11 direct every believer to build up their strength in the Lord by intentionally living by what God’s word says, prayer, etc
  • An understanding of the reality of spiritual warfare motivate us to do all to prevent Satan from gaining an upper hand over us [2Cor 2:11]
  • It will motivate us not to expose ourselves to lifestyles that will breach the Lord’s hedge of protection around us. E.g. Job 1:10a
  • It will motivate the believer to shun every provision of the evil one and rather pursue godly values
  • Evil day implies when our faith is challenged by difficult circumstances of life, when discouraged, when God seems silent in the face of troubles, etc...
Thus, we are advised to put on the whole armour of God NOW!

CHRISTIAN ARMOUR-2:
Designed for you to finish strong
[Eph 6:13-14]

So put on God's armour now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground [Eph 6:13 GNB]. 
God did not leave us defenceless for the devil to buffet us as he chooses. Lets discuss the first two pieces of our armour; which are designed to ensure our victory – Truth and Righteousness.
  • Not everyone who resists the devil’s attacks ends up standing firm in the end.
  • We must be alert, never be complacent and determined to finish strong. 1Cor 9:24-27
  • We must have the attitude of Christ towards the end goal Heb 12:2-3
  • Be warned! there are falsehood in the end times e.g. 2Pet 2:1-3;
  • We must equip ourselves with the truth of the gospel like the Berean Christians in Acts 17:11
  • Ultimately, by growing into Christ-like maturity, we can detect falsehood in every shape or form. Eph 4:13-15
  • Our righteousness is imputed by accepting Christ’s provision of salvation. 1Corinthians 1:30
  • RIGHTEOUSNESS, is likened to a breastplate that protects the heart and associated vital organs. 1John 3:7-9
  • We believe God in our hearts. So, protect your heart of faith! Romans 10:9

CHRISTIAN ARMOUR-3: Standing In Readiness To Proclaim The Good News [Eph 6:13-15]

‘And as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace’ [Eph 6:15 NB]
Lets discuss the need for every believer in these end times to stand in readiness to proclaim and defend the good news with wisdom, tact and diplomacy; but fearlessly and willing to pay the price if need be.
  • There are battles being waged in our society today against our freedom to proclaim the gospel e.g. Political correctness, Mockery and intimidation of believers, it could cost one’s job, reputation, position in society, etc.
  • However, we stand today to preach Jesus as the only way to the Father – John 14:6 
  • We need to be firm footed in the gospel of peace; [Rom 3:23; John 3:3; etc]
  • We must be willing to share the gospel from the pulpit, at home with the family e.g. family altar; among work colleagues, school mates; etc
  • We need to actively seek for opportunities to share the gospel, and also know how to take advantage of every situation in life to preach Christ.
  • We must be ready to pay any price for sharing the good news, as may be occasioned [Note 2Tim 3:12]

In April 2019, we studied redemption via Jesus Christ. REDEMPTION involves the special Grace of God that not only forgives a man’s sins, but also restores and overrules all the loss occasioned by it. Col 1:20

Redemption-1: Who Is The Son Through Whom The Father Redeemed Us? (Col 1:15 – 22)

Through the Son, then, God decided to bring the whole universe back to himself. God made peace through his Son's blood on the cross and so brought back to himself all things, both on earth and in heaven (Col 1:20 GNB). 
There are two major activities of God right from the beginning: CREATION and REDEMPTION.
  • Redemption is to LIVE AGAIN
  • The Father redeemed us back into a living relationship with Himself through the sacrifice of Christ
  • God revealed Himself in the form that we can relate with through the person of Jesus. Heb 1:1-3a
  • We are redeemed through the Son to grow into His nature
  • Our redemption is secured by faith in the finished work of Christ alone; it is not by what we do that completes it.  1Cor 2:1-2, 5
  • Believers receives true revelation of what God has done through Jesus for mankind and will strive for more of Him - grow fullness of Christ Phil 3:7-10

Redemption-2: Our Redemption Is Through Christ Alone  [Col 1:20-23, 27-29]

“...to present you holy and without blemish, and without charge in His sight, if indeed you continue in the faith grounded and settled, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel...” (Col 1:22-23 MKJV)
Through the sacrifice of the Son of God, we are redeemed back to God.
  • ‘Christ in you, the hope of glory' is the revealed mystery to all men including the gentiles. Colossians 1:27
  • .Through Christ that nature of sin is replaced with Godly nature that makes us attractive to Him [Rom 11:15; Eph 2:1-5, 12-13]
  • Without Christ it can only be a struggle to try to please God, as Paul explains in Rom 7:15-25
  • To be grounded and settled in the faith means to grow deeper in the knowledge and the experience of Christ; which should be the pursuit of every believer.  Rom 1:16
  • Christ alone is the solid rock we stand on.
  • Beware of the possibility of shifting away from the hope of the gospel – e.g. focusing all our messages on receiving blessings rather than growing in Christ.

Redemption-3: We Have Been Redeemed To Live Like Christ [Col 1:26-28; Phil 3:12-19]

 ‘...Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus’ [Col 1:27-28 KJV]
We are redeemed to live 'like Christ'. Our redemption testimony is not for fashion, rather is for the Kingdom pursuit.
  • To be like Christ (or perfect in Christ) means you emulate the lifestyle of Christ Himself, live consciously for God, remain faithful to the Kingdom of God
  • It is absolutely possible to be like Christ if only we remain in Christ.
  • We can only be like Christ when we totally submit, depend and allow Christ himself in our daily lives. Colossians 1:26-28
  • Every Christian should ‘press on to be like Christ ‘ which is our ultimate goal as modelled by Apostle Paul in Philippians 3:12-19
  • Before you emulate another lifestyle that looks like Godly living, first crosscheck with the Bible.1 Thessalonians 5:21.
  • Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
  • Emulating without Jesus could lead to destruction
  • Ensure you know the Word of God and Jesus
  • Establish a personal relationship with God which will help your journey
  • Listen and obey leading of the Holy Spirit; your teacher who helps to warn you of incoming evil.

Giving 1: The Macedonian example (2Cor8:1-7)

One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. Proverbs 11:24

Apostle Paul identified the Macedonians as the proper way to give.
  • We are not intimated but encouraged by other people's examples concerning biblical giving.
  • Giving is a grace received from God. 2Corinthians 8: 1
  • Giving is a gracious act carried out despite our challenges.  2Corinthians 8: 2
  • Giving could be money, time, resources, talents etc
  • We must cross-check with the Word of God to give correctly.
  • Giving is like investment or sowing.

Giving 2: The Macedonian example (2Cor8:1-7)

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25

Today, we want to consider the 'how' of the Macedonian giving.
  1. We must FIRST give ourselves (submit) to God, then all resources. 2Corinthians 8: 5
  2. They gave beyond their ability. (Giving could be sacrificial.)  2 Corinthians 8: 3
  3. They gave freely - not forceful.
  4. They were eager, willing to give.
Also, Paul encouraged us to have a defined purpose in giving, give as God has prospered you, plan ahead in your budget and not base your giving on 'eye service' or emotional appeal.

Nurture your giving with faith and prayers.

Giving 3: The Supreme example (2Cor 8:8-15)

“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.

Paul underlines the importance of giving by applying the highest of all examples; the grace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • The real source of whatever we posses is God.  Deuteronomy 8:18
  • All comes from God and belongs to Him. 1 Chronicles 29:14b
  • We are blessed to be a blessings too. Don't be the rich fool in Luke 12:13 - 21
  • We are all accountable to God. A selfish person is at risk of God's anger instead of blessings. Luke 12:21
  • Selfishness and disobedience suffers others
  • Always give your best and from your heart to the Lord. Numbers 18:29

Is to love God and your neighbour!
Mark 12:30 is a summary of all the laws of God in the Old Testament. We are meant to love God with our:
  • Heart: 1st call - passion to worship Luke6:45
  • Soul: willingly 
  • Mind: intellectual via meditating the Word of God Philippians 2:5
  • Strength: via works, service, good deeds. 

Loving God with your strength (service or resources) without your heart is a waste of everything.

Loving God is to seek to please God in all these aspects of one’s life
NB:
A struggle to serve God indicates a need to re-examine your love for Him.

Loving God-3: Do You Love Jesus Above All Else?

If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me (Matt 16:24).

Handling self interest versus the Lord’s will
Everyday choice of life could come in conflict with the Lord’s will for our lives e.g. choice of career, life partner, societal recognition like Saul to Paul, even to the basic of denying good food to get closer to God ( Fasting and Prayers). Are you prepared to deny this ‘self’ and follow God? 

NB:
Denying self means letting go of our personal convenience to satisfy God. 
  • We ignorantly or unwittingly reject God’s will because of: human feelings eg Peter in Mark 16:21-23, ignorance of the Divine plan, fear of loosing close relationships or friendships, etc
  • ‘Self will’ could be dangerous and possibly lead to destruction (Proverbs 14:12). So, learn to trust God and His plans (Jeremiah 29: 11).

Our obedience to love God is a blessing as lives are transformed and restored to the Kingdom of God and guess what? We are also rewarded by God right from this earth. Matthew 25:21

A Fantastic Promise

The fantastic promise for the believer to reign in this life is by the One and only Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:17
  • Greater works meant primarily more conversions, sharing the good news. Isaiah 61:1-3
  • Because I go to my Father: Upon ascending Jesus would send the Holy Spirit [John 7:39; 16:7; Acts 1:8]. Believers will reach every part of the world with the Word of God.
  • His ascension meant the descent of the empowering Spirit and the inauguration of Christ’s heavenly intercession, thus enabling the church to fulfil its mission of evangelising the world.

Prayer – An Indispensable Ingredient

And whatever you may ask in My name, that I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son [John 14:13 MKJV]

Believers praying in Christ’ name, works together with Christ’s intercession in heaven and the help of the Holy Spirit, to enable the greater works.
  • Jesus was clearly a man of prayer. Jesus had the habit of regularly spending time alone with God in prayer before embarking on important assignments.
  • Jesus did nothing without hearing from the Father [e.g. John 5:30].
  • Personal fellowship in prayer is also a time to replenish expended spiritual virtue [Luke 6:19; 8:46].
  • ‘Never undertake more Christian work than can be covered in believing prayer’ Alan Redpath
  • Every forward thrust in the church should be immersed in prayer.
  • Jesus secret life of prayer should become our secrete life as well.

In My Name

If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it [John 14:14 GNB]
To pray in the name of Jesus means to pray ‘by the authority of’ or ‘in harmony with’ or as ‘sanctioned by’ Jesus Christ. We therefore pray in Jesus’ name by His approval.
  • If someone has not acknowledged Jesus as their lord, using the name of Jesus will be futile; they will not have Christ’s authority backing their prayers or request e.g. the 7 sons of Sceva in Acts 19:11-18
  • We are basically given this authority as Christ’s representatives, who are about His business not selfish ambitions.
  • You can't sin and and back it with a prayer in Jesus name. Psalm 66:17-19
  • Ask God to guide you into His will and follow it.
  • It is our responsibility to ask; it is God’s responsibility to accomplish.
  • Believing prayers, through faith in His name accomplishes great things; not our works.

Excellence is the quality of being outstanding.
  • As believers in Christ, an excellent spirit is already in our DNA, it is our responsibility to recognise and nurture it.
  • It is God’s nature enabling us to do all things through Christ who strengthens us [Phi 4:13]. 
  • It’s a life that is committed to honouring God in all aspects and in all situations; in public and in secrete; a life of true integrity  
  • Daniel is a classic example of excellence in a Christian’s way of life [Dan 1:4, 8-9, 6:3-4]. -- no fault in him.
  • A Christian can internalise an excellent spirit by desiring and consistently studying the Word of God, meditating on it and applying it to life [2Pet 1:2-3; Joshua 1:8; 1Pet 2:2,12]]​
  • An excellent you will not conform or be limited by the world. Dare to STAND OUT!

By the Spirit Of Wisdom

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)

One proof of a life with an excellent spirit is the manifestation of divine wisdom.
  • Divine wisdom makes otherwise ordinary men extraordinary
  • God’s wisdom is inspired through our dependence on the Holy Spirit.
  • It has no bearing with human IQ. 
  • What we should seek for is godly wisdom -which produces the fruit of the Spirit [Gal 5:22-23]
  • Many Christians lack wisdom and discretion in daily life because there’s no fear of God, and there’s no wisdom of God [Proverbs 9:10]
  • True wisdom is to trust God to lead you to the best outcome [Daniel 2:22; Isaiah 46:10]
  • Am I manifesting the wisdom from above or earthly wisdom? ​

You Were Made To Shine

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matt 5:16).

Excellence is beyond distinguished accomplishments in secular life.
  • You and I; who are called by His Name would stand out as light in this darkness world. (Matt 5:16)
  • Godliness shines forth in appearance, words and actions. 
  • God has saved us so that our lives would be a light to others, to free them from darkness to be reconciled to God. 
  • If those around us do not see anything different about us, there has to be something not right with our light.

Group 3: Ways to maintain balance
  • set priorities - don't be everywhere
  • focus on specific skills/ units
  • follow the rota, be organized, 
  • develop good Work-Life balance
  • take time off duty by allowing others to serve

What is the Kingdom?

Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?" - Ecclesiastes 8:4 (AKJV)

​The Kingdom of God was inaugurated in Genesis and eternally established in the book of Revelation.
Aim: To understand the Biblical concept of the Kingdom.
  • His dominion is everlasting Daniel 7:14
  • All nations to receive (accept) the Kingdom Luke 19: 15
  • Its not influenced by politics - far from worldly monarchy
  • Invest in your gifts to advance the Kingdom.​
The kingdom is made up of:
  1. The King
  2. The constitution - lifestyle, principles
  3. The subjects - you & I
  4. The Territory - here & there
Take note: A righteous king rules over a righteous kingdom and vice versa. ​

The Earthly Millennial Reign of Christ

The future earthly kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ is a world where there is true peace and security, no pain, no war, no evil, no sickness and no death. 
​For the Lord declares, “I have placed my chosen King on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.” Psalm 2:6 (NLT)
  • The Kingdom of God is the truth and within you! John 18:37, Luke 17: 21
  • The Lord Jesus is coming back again to consummate the Kingdom and hand it back to His Father. Acts 1:11
  • King Jesus will return the second time in style! Rev 19: 11-16​​ 
  • The righteous flourish with peace in His reign Psalms 72:7
The kingdom of God is here already, but the final consummation of the kingdom awaits the second coming of the King.
